Research

Our research agenda studies how institutions, social norms, and individual preferences shape economic behavior and welfare in low-income settings. We combine theory and empirical methods.

OUR CURRENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHTS

  • SOCIAL PREFERENCES

    SOCIAL PREFERENCES

We examine the origins and persistence of social preferences over the life course and study how they shape key development behaviors, including informal risk-sharing, competition, and collective action.

  • RISK MANAGEMENT

    RISK MANAGEMENT

Low-income households are disproportionately exposed to income and non-income shocks, and these shocks can have persistent consequences by pushing families into poverty traps.

  • LABOR MARKETS AND GENDER

    LABOR MARKETS AND GENDER

Women frequently face lower earnings and slower career progression than similarly qualified men, reflecting a combination of constraints, norms, and structural barriers. We investigate the determinants of these gaps and evaluate interventions aimed at closing them.

  • CONFLICT AND INSTITUTIONS

    CONFLICT AND INSTITUTIONS

Conflict can arise within households, communities, organizations, and in the governance of natural resources. We examine both the consequences of conflict exposure and the institutional arrangements that can mitigate conflict and support recovery.
