Welcome to the Community - Know How about the German science system for international PostDocs (women) in the natural and life sciences

Working environments at universities are becoming increasingly internationalized, and cross-border mobility of scientists is becoming more and more frequent. For foreign female scientists, entering the differentiated German academic system can be full of challenges, especially if their academic socialization during their studies and doctorate did not take place in Germany: Whether it is the specifics of the university and application landscape, unfamiliar ways of behaving and speaking in colloquia and research groups or the difficulties of establishing contacts - much knowledge about these contexts is informal and not written down anywhere.
The aim of the project is to strengthen international female postdocs in the natural and life sciences faculties in their role as early career researchers in the German academic system. It focuses on the often difficult entry phase into the scientific community. For many participants, this involves practicing new ways of acting that are culturally atypical for them.
The four consecutive sessions will focus on the following topics:

  • Introduction to the academic system in Germany (functioning of universities and relevant research institutions)
  • (Non-)verbal communication in the scientific environment of Göttingen
  • Scientific criticism
  • Empowerment

During the program phase, international young female researchers are to be made fit(ter) for the academic system and optimally supported in their career path at the University of Göttingen.

Funded by the Equal Opportunity Innovation Fund and the program for female professors.
