Our Mission Statement

The Göttingen Department of English is committed to teaching language, literature, and culture as essential dimensions of how human beings know themselves and build social connections. We aim to convey the importance of literature and language as creative forms of human expression, critical self-reflection, and intellectual exchange, especially in times when text is increasingly generated by AI. At our department, we value critical rigor, creative thinking, and intellectual inquisitiveness, and we aim at fostering an environment where students can develop strong communication and critical-thinking skills. We believe that studying language, narrative, poetry, and critical theory are vital not only for comprehending our subject but also for human understanding, cultural communication, and the broadening of individual and social horizons. Pursuing Anglophone Literature and Culture, Linguistics, Medieval and North American Studies in Göttingen means reading, thinking, and developing ideas in an intellectual community of scholars from all over the world. As a community, we strive to acknowledge each other's individuality, cultivate an atmosphere of tolerance and respect, and remain open to all expressions of gender and cultural diversity.
