Accommodation Service
Receiving a letter of admission does not automatically guarantee a place in student accommodation!
Therefore, please start independently looking for accommodation as early as possible and do not underestimate the effort involved in finding a room. Postings for rooms or flats are usually published about 2-3 months in advance before they are ready for occupancy. Please direct all enquiries regarding a place in student accommodation directly to the Studierendenwerk. The Accommodation Service provides advice and support in finding suitable accommodation for international students newly arrived in Göttingen. Its service is available for:
- international doctoral students (if enrolled at the University of Göttingen)
- international degree-seeking students
- international students in double degree- and joint degree-programmes
- international exchange students
If you would like to use the help of the Accommodation Service for finding an accommodation, please fill out our registration form.
Please note: The University does not provide accommodation. Admission and enrolment at the University do not imply admission to student dormitories or housing of any kind.
In Göttingen (and Germany in general), it is difficult to find affordable accommodation. The housing market is very competitive, particularly at the beginning of the winter semester during the months of September, October and November. Therefore, it is advisable to start looking for accommodation as soon as possible.
Rooms in student dormitories operated by the Studentenwerk are very reasonably priced at €200 to €300. Rental costs for private housing are higher. Rooms in flat-shares easily cost between €300 and €450 (if not more), apartments are about €400 -€600 per month, depending on the location and amenities.
Affordable accommodation for families is difficult to find.
Many international students live in student dorms. Most dorms are run by the Studentenwerk (Student Welfare Services), an independent non-profit organisation closely collaborating with the University.
Please find here information on the availabilities and the application process.
