Our research focuses on questions of long-term economic development and health economics. For research findings, see the publications page. Here, some ongoing or recently completed externally funded projects are highlighted as examples. (DFG Projekt STR 876/6-1) The project examines how hyperbolic discounting and time-inconsistent choices shape health behavior, longevity, and welfare. It develops theories to explain early retirement, persistent addiction, and low investment in preventive care, with the aim of guiding policies that support healthier decisions and better long-term outcomes. (DFG Projekt STR 876/7-1) The project examines the effects of obesity on health, aging, and labor market outcomes using genetic data and econometric analysis. Building on these findings, it develops an extended economic model that integrates genetic predispositions, health deficits, and time-inconsistent behavior to derive evidence-based policy recommendations for addressing the obesity epidemic. (DFG-SNF Projekt STR 876/3-1) The project examines how pre-retirement income inequality affects health and consumption in old age, and the role of social welfare systems in Germany and Switzerland.
