Alter Botanischer Garten

Winter opening hours

Dear visitors,
Our winter opening hours will apply from November. We would like to inform you that there are some changes to ensure your safety and comfort.
New this year is that the outdoor area outside the rampart will remain closed. This is primarily for the safety of our visitors, as the paths and trails can often become slippery and dangerous in bad weather.
However, in order to give you the opportunity to continue visiting our show greenhouses, they will remain open from 08:00 to 16:00 from November. The entrance in the Karspüle will also remain open to give you access to the greenhouses.
The wall passages, the entrances at the auditorium and in Wilhelm Weber Str. will remain closed from November to the end of February. One of the reasons for this is to ensure that you are not unexpectedly faced with closed gates when storms, rain or snow have made it necessary to close them.
We would ask you to take note of these changes and ensure your safety. We hope that you can continue to visit the Old Botanic Garden and experience the diversity of plants.

Mammoth leaf on the Great Pond

Our Gunnera, also known as mammoth leaf or scientifically Gunnera manicata, is an imposing plant with huge leaves that originally comes from the humid regions of South America.
This year it has shown remarkable development. Although it suffered severe frost damage at the beginning of the season, it has made an impressive recovery and has grown particularly well.

Important to know: Gunnera should not be confused with giant hogweed. Although both plants have large leaves, the giant hogweed is known for its harmful properties, as its sap can cause severe burns on contact with the skin. Gunnera, on the other hand, is harmless and impresses with its size and striking appearance alone.
