The Department of Classical Philology at the Faculty of Humanities of the Georg-August University of Göttingen looks back on a long tradition: it was established in 1734, three years before the official founding of the university in 1737. The department has been shaped by the work of outstanding scholars such as Johann Matthias Gesner, Christian Gottlob Heyne, Karl Otfried Müller, Friedrich Leo, Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff, Konrat Ziegler, and Kurt Latte.
